M101…90° is a replica model of the “Colonnade” in The Cooper Union – a long glass corridor looking out West to the sidewalk and East into the school library. The model was transformed into a video dolly on wheels, which I then placed two GoPros inside to film while following the M101 bus line from Cooper Union 7th Street up to 90th Street, and back.
The two recordings were then projected back into both ends of the real corridor, accompanied by surround-sound recordings of the bus. For viewers to watch both screens, they had to turn their entire body 90° so that they also had to confront the real site at hand, creating a moment for viewers to imagine other people from different parts of the city while also moving in their respective spaces.
In addition, the model was placed at the end of the library, elevated to eye level with a shelf, and accompanied by a speaker playing the soundtrack from the video. For viewers to find this model, they had to venture on a journey, referencing the wall text and map. Upon discovery, viewers were then confronted with a new live viewing experience of the project facing out East.
